Durian

Yes, durian, the king of all fruits.

My friend edison had been talking about this fruit for ages, and I really, really, really wanted to try it. Of course, living in the States instead of Asia, I can't just go to any supermarket and find one. Desperate measures were being called for.

My friend mosaica was going on a trip, far far away, to a place where there actually was an asian market. I begged and I begged and I begged and hinted and threatened and lo and behold, she found a durian for us to try!

It looked pretty threatening though, how to open it??? Luckily google came to the rescue and we figured out a way.

One travel writer described the smell as 'its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock', so mosaica took a very hesitant sniff and said it was quite disgusting. I smelled it too and it smelled fine to me ^^. Not to be deterred, we got out some of the meat.

Mosaica gave some to me, and volunteered me to take the first bite, since everybody else was too cowardly. I happily complied and ate some. It was good!!!!!!! Heavenly! Delicious! I liked it. (People either love durian, or hate it, there don't seem to be any in the intermediate group) They waited a few minutes to see whether I wouldn't fall over dead, and then other people tried. Only one of my kids was willing to try it (yes, Sylvia) She almost spat it out, but then reconsidered and ate it. She didn't come back for seconds though.

We still have leftovers and the pits. I wonder whether I can plant them. Would be cool to try. BTW, later that night, my pee had a very distinctive durian smell to it. Interesting.

Another durian link.

Turns out that this durian was from Thailand, my next quest is trying to find one from Malaysia, since edision says he likes those better. Not easy to find any durians around here though, not sure whether I'll ever find a malaysian one.

Ik had al eens gelezen over de geur van de durian...
Ik moet eerlijk zeggen: het ziet er niet zo appetijtelijk uit op de foto ;-)

Hmph! You make me out to be much less intrepid that I am! I never ONCE considered not eating the durian, and when I said it was disgusting, I had a big glorious GRIN on my face! I was just, you know, taking my first durian eating experience Very Seriously.

I still think the smell is fabulously revolting, and the sensation of that smell in my nose and the lovely creamy taste on my tongue, well, it was a comlex and fascinating.
