When I first started to hike in the North-Eastern woods, I used to think that these were 'baby pines' Or at least something which would grow big and huge. I couldn't have been more wrong.
These are known as princess pine or ground pine and are actually clubmosses and are in the family of fern-allies. There latin name is Lycopodium or wolf's foot.
Interesting.
