Tomato Soup with Seaweed

The winter weather has inspired me to make soup more often. Tomato soup is popular and we all like to add cheese to it.

A friend's daughter decided to add some nori to her soup and Sylvia totally has adopted this.

Now Sylvia's soup isn't complete without a lot of nori on it. Interesting addition. It looks cool for sure.

More Snow and More Sick Kids

This year has been quite intense snow wise. We spend a lot of time shoveling the driveway. Good exercise I guess ^^

The nice thing about snow days is that it is a great excuse to cancel all appointments for that day and just snuggle up inside, playing pool on Erik's new pool set. Even the cat agrees that this is an awesome toy.

This winter also has been filled with sick kids. Apart from the skull fracture nothing serious, just annoying normal winter illnesses. It just means that almost every day has at least one sick kid at home. Oh well. It is almost spring, isn't it?

Today two dentist and one doctor appointment but tomorrow I will cancel everything and have a day without driving around.

Winter Fun with Erik

Today I took Erik sledding and skating on a local golf course.

The hills are awesome apart from the fact that you have to go UP every time after you race down on the sled.

We had a great time.

The nice thing about this skating pond is that they sell hot chocolate and pretzels. And they always have a fire on the weekends. With marshmallows.

Life is good!

When Convenience Is Not So Convenient After All

This morning I wanted to make some grains for breakfast and checked the container. 'Stovetop: 10 minutes, Microwave: 3 minutes' Well that was easy. Of course I went for the convenience of the microwave.

Filled a bowl with grains and water. Put timer to three minutes. Walked away. Came back and took out my bowl. The grains in the bowl looked awesome, nicely cooked and yummy.

Only...

half of the grains had cooked over the side of the bowl.

And were all over my microwave.

Oops.

Spent quite some time cleaning that up. And learned that next time I'll use a bigger bowl ^^

Sylvia Update

Sylvia is slowly but surely healing from her skull fracture and concussion. She still has head aches but they are getting less frequent. She does tire very easily though and her behavior detoriates when she is tired so that is sometimes challenging.

Her hearing is continuing to be a concern. She fractured her temporal bone and I am not sure whether the hearing loss in her left ear is related to that or whether it could be nerve damage.

She had an extensive audiology exam where she tested quite depressed for hearing in BOTH her ears. This was surprising at first but luckily it was explained by having normal fluid behind her ear drum. This was most likely related to a recent cold. Yet another flat tympanogram as I have often seen in my other kids. They did secondary round of testing to circumvent her ear drum. This showed good hearing in her right ear but hearing loss in her left ear still.
